Memberships are typically organized into different groupings based on what benefits are offered, having options that are unique to a group, or the need for special groups "VIPs" that you might not want your customers to see. These groupings are called Tiers. Here are a few examples of tiers:

Founder's tier: My first 100 members. They will all get a 20% discount on everything they purchase.
Choice tier: Customers who will be allocated products based on their preferences, but can customize each shipment. 
Case Club: Any member who wants to receive a case of wine every 6 months with free shipping. 

When considering how to best organize your members by tier, here are some questions to ask:

  1. Will my members receive different discounts or shipping benefits?
  2. When customers create a new membership, is it important to show uniquely different options so they can self-select what membership tier is best for them?
  3. Do you need to create "hidden" tiers that members as added to after they join, like a VIP or Friends & Family tier?

If the answer is "yes" to any of the above questions, you'll want to have multiple tiers, one for each unique grouping.
